post August Bank Holiday

For once we had lovely weather over the bank holiday weekend! We now have the paralympics at the same time our young people are heading back to school. In the shop this week we have a lot of lovely local organic produce: bunched carrots, beetroot and onions, runner beans, courgettes, spinach, broad beans, marrow and a new variety of blue french beans!
This week we will also have fresh organic chicken and the very popular speciality rye sourdough bread.
According to the newspapers this weekend we love cookery programs and one popular dish is cheese souffle - here is a recipe with a seasonal salad or you could use some of our lovely local vegetables. If you want to use all those lovely courgettes and tomatoes try courgette and tomato gratin. Here's a stuffed marrow recipe from the Hairy Bikers - we have all the ingredients in the shop except pecorino cheese but we do have fresh parmesan.
Have a good week! By the way - have you seen the scarecrows in Thornton-le-Dale? It's the Thornton-le-Dale scarecrow festival this week.

Life after the Olympics

Those who stayed up to watch the closing Olympic ceremony are feeling a bit tired! Didn't our Yorkshire athletes do well! Today Leeds is hosting a civic reception for its athletes.
Food for budding athletes - Butternut squash (in the shop this week) contains many vital poly-phenolic anti-oxidants and vitamins. It is very low in calories. It contains no saturated fats or cholesterol; but is rich source of dietary fibre and phyto-nutrients. Squash is one of the common vegetable that is often recommended by dieticians in the cholesterol controlling and weight reduction programs. Here is a butternut squash soup recipe - you could use organic yoghurt or cream instead of the creme fraiche. You could also try this delicious recipe for roasting butternut squash.
In the shop this week we have a lot of local organic produce - carrots, cabbage, chard, spinach, lettuce, marrow and tomatoes to name but a few. For a full list see our latest fruit and vegetable price guide.
Have a good week! By the way we will be open on bank holiday monday!
